Sofia – Bulgaria: The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church has expressed its approval of the recent legislation prohibiting the promotion of non-traditional sexual orientations and gender identities in Bulgarian schools.
In a statement released on August 08,2024, the Church praised the government for taking steps to protect children from what it considers harmful ideologies. The Synod emphasized its long-standing position on the traditional family and the importance of spiritual and moral education based on Christian values.
The Church also expressed its hope that this legislation marks the beginning of a broader effort to prioritize the upbringing and education of children in line with Bulgarian cultural and religious traditions.
The Bulgarian Orthodox Church has been a vocal critic of LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality initiatives, often aligning its views with conservative political forces in the country.
