Yerevan-Armenia: The Supreme Spiritual Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church, led by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing trials in Azerbaijan against political leaders, military personnel, and civilians from Artsakh. In a statement released on March 12, 2025, the Council denounced the trials as “fabricated” and a continuation of Azerbaijan’s “enmity and aggression” against the Armenian people.

The Council asserted that the trials, conducted in blatant violation of international law, are accompanied by torture and inhumane treatment of Armenian captives. They accused Azerbaijan of attempting to distort the history of Artsakh’s self-determination and to justify genocide and war crimes by portraying the victims as criminals. The statement also highlighted Azerbaijan’s efforts to obstruct international legal representation and deny spiritual care to the captives.

“Through these sham trials and the false testimonies obtained under torture from Armenian captives, the Azerbaijani authorities endeavor to secure verdicts that will serve their insidious and far-reaching objectives, laying the groundwork for further coercion and aggression against the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian people,” the statement declared.

The Council called for unified action from Armenian state institutions and pan-Armenian organizations to secure the immediate release of the captives. They urged the Armenian government to utilize all available resources and international platforms to achieve this goal. Additionally, they appealed to the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries and international human rights organizations to implement decisive measures against Azerbaijan.

The statement emphasized that a lasting peace in the region can only be achieved through the just resolution of existing issues and the realization of the rights of the Armenians of Artsakh.

The Council expressed its prayers and support for the captives, urging them to refrain from actions that could endanger their lives. They specifically called on Ruben Vardanyan to end his hunger strike and continue the struggle for a dignified life with faith. The statement concluded with prayers for all captives, their families, and those affected by the situation.
