Washington, D.C. – United States: The annual Greek Independence Day celebration took place at the White House, where Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the United States presented a holy cross to U.S. President Donald Trump in a solemn moment on March 24, 2025.

In his address, Archbishop Elpidophoros highlighted the importance of supporting Christianity, particularly in the Middle East, and acknowledged the role of the U.S. president in defending freedom and peace worldwide. He compared the president’s leadership to that of Emperor Constantine the Great, recalling the Roman ruler’s vision of the cross as a symbol of divine victory.

While handing over the cross, Archbishop Elpidophoros referenced the emperor’s famous vision: “This cross is the very symbol that led Constantine to victory, as Christ revealed to him. He said, ‘Εν τούτω νίκα’ – ‘In this sign, conquer.’” He expressed his hope that the cross would serve as a guiding force for peace and strength.

President Trump, visibly moved, accepted the gift with gratitude and acknowledged its deep significance.

The event also recognized the White House Office of Faith-Based Initiatives and the spiritual mission of Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul, underscoring the strong ties between Greek Orthodox traditions and the United States.
