Albanian Church Elects Leaders to Vacant Gjirokastra and Korça

Tirana – Albania: The Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, under the leadership of Archbishop Joan of Tirana, Durrës, and all Albania, has elected two new metropolitans. The elections, held on September 16, filled the vacant metropolitan sees of Gjirokastra and Korça.
Metropolitan of Gjirokastra
His Grace Nathanail (Stergiu), the former Metropolitan of Amantia, was unanimously elected as the new Metropolitan of Gjirokastra. His enthronement is scheduled for September 20, 2025, at the Cathedral Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Gjirokastra. Prior to his new appointment, Metropolitan Nathanail had a long history of service in the church, including over two decades as a priest and spiritual director in the Metropolis of Gjirokastra. He also served as Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod.
Metropolitan of Korça
His Grace Anastas (Mamaj), the former Bishop of Kruja, was also unanimously elected as the new Metropolitan of Korça. His enthronement will take place on September 27, 2025, at the Cathedral Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Korça. Metropolitan Anastas has a unique background, having held significant positions in the banking sector before his ordination. Since 2017, he has been heavily involved in the administration of the Church’s property and financial activities.
Following their election, both new metropolitans delivered a “Great Message” in the chapel of the Synodal Center, a traditional expression of acceptance of their new duties. The elections mark a new chapter for the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.
