Abune Basilyos Elected as Patriarch of Eritrean Orthodox Church

Asmara – Eritrea: Archbishop Abune Basilyos (Basil) has been elected as the 6th Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church. The historic election took place on December 2024, following a rigorous process involving the Holy Synod, representatives from various dioceses, and monasteries.

The election process, which adhered to established guidelines, saw a significant turnout of voters, both in person and virtually. Three prominent figures were nominated for the position:

  1. Archbishop Abune Luqas (Luke), Secretary General of the Holy Synod
  2. Archbishop Abune Basilyos, Chief Administrator of the throne of the Patriarchate
  3. Abune Merqoriewos (Mercurius), Bishop of the Diocese of Anseba 

The newly elected Patriarch is expected to assume his official duties on Sunday, January 26th, 2025, during an ordination ceremony at the head of Churches Saint Virgin Mary.

The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, a significant religious institution in Eritrea, has a rich history and tradition. The election of a new Patriarch is a momentous occasion, and the Church community eagerly anticipates the leadership of Archbishop Basilyos.
