Patriarch Daniil of Bulgaria Meets Israeli Ambassador Yosef Levi Sfari

Sofia – Bulgaria: Patriarch Daniil of Bulgaria welcomed Ambassador Yosef Levi Sfari of Israel to the Sofia Metropolis headquarters, where they engaged in discussions on historical ties and present-day challenges on March 18, 2025. The meeting was attended by Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod.

During the conversation, Patriarch Daniil highlighted the Bulgarian Orthodox Church’s pivotal role in saving thousands of Jews from Nazi death camps during World War II, emphasizing the courage and spiritual wisdom of Bulgarian hierarchs.

Expressing his deep gratitude, Ambassador Sfari thanked the Bulgarian Orthodox Church for its decisive role in the rescue of Bulgarian Jews and acknowledged the strong spiritual connections between Bulgaria and Israel.

Both leaders stressed the importance of remembering history, particularly in times of global crises, to prevent past mistakes and foster peace and reconciliation. They reaffirmed their commitment to promoting unity and understanding among nations.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of gifts, symbolizing mutual respect and goodwill.
