Russian Orthodox Church and State Join Forces to Reduce Abortions

Moscow- Russia: The Russian Orthodox Church has made significant strides in its campaign to limit abortions, as revealed in a recent meeting with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The initiative, which has garnered support from over 71 regions of the country, aims to reduce the number of abortions performed in Russia.

A key development is the growing number of private clinics that have pledged to stop performing abortions. Over 500 clinics, representing 18% of all licensed abortion providers, have already made this commitment. This reflects a growing awareness of the moral and ethical implications of abortion and a desire to promote a culture of life.

A sociological study conducted by the Russian Academy of Sciences further supports the Church’s efforts. The study found that a significant majority of Russian citizens (77%) believe that a child is a person from the moment of conception. Moreover, 48% of respondents believe that the state should take the lead in addressing issues related to abortion, rather than leaving it solely to private clinics.

In response to these findings, the Church has called for stricter regulations on abortions. A law prohibiting the inducement of women to have abortions has already been adopted in 10 regions of Russia, and this number is expected to double by the end of the year.

To coordinate and amplify its efforts, the Church is establishing a Coordination Center for Demography and Family Values within the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Service. This center will unite various church projects focused on reducing abortions and promoting a culture of life.

The Russian Orthodox Church’s initiative to limit abortions is a significant step towards protecting the sanctity of life and promoting a more compassionate and just society.
