Tallinn- Estonia: The Estonian Orthodox Church has taken a significant step towards greater administrative independence, following the conclusion of its Plenary Assembly on August 20, 2024.

Under the leadership of Metropolitan Eugen of Tallinn and All Estonia, the assembly approved a new version of the church’s statute, which outlines its independence in managing administrative, economic, educational, and civil affairs. This move aligns with agreements reached with the Estonian state during recent negotiations.

In addition to the statutory changes, the assembly also approved a name change for the church, officially adopting the title “Estonian Orthodox Church.” This update reflects the Tomos granted by Patriarch Alexius II and further solidifies the church’s identity.

The Plenary Assembly commended the Synod for its efforts in negotiating with the state and expressed optimism about the potential to overcome the existing church divide. The assembly emphasized the importance of maintaining canonical order, mutual respect, and equal rights for all members.

To address ongoing challenges, the assembly decided to continue its activities and instructed the Synod to determine the need for future sessions.

As the Republic of Estonia celebrated its 33rd anniversary of re-independence, the Plenary Assembly offered prayers for the nation’s prosperity, cultural preservation, and continued freedom.
