His Holiness Abune Mathias Mourns Victims of a Tragic Landslide in Southern Ethiopia

Addis Ababa- Ethiopia: In a heartfelt statement from Washington, D.C., His Holiness Abune Mathias, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, offered his condolences to the families and loved ones of at least 229 people who lost their lives in a devastating landslide in Kencho Shacha Gozdi locality of Geze Gofa district on July 22, 2024. The incident, which occurred in the Gofa Zone of Southern Ethiopia, has left the nation in shock and mourning.

Expressing his profound sadness, His Holiness noted that while Ethiopia has faced its share of tragic events, the magnitude of this disaster was particularly difficult to comprehend. The Patriarch emphasized the importance of faith in times of crisis, highlighting the belief in the resurrection of the dead as a source of comfort and solace.

Calling for prayers and support for the victims and their families, Abune Mathias urged the community to come together in solidarity and compassion. Despite the challenges and afflictions faced by the nation, he expressed hope for a future filled with glad tidings.
