Balamand- Lebanon: The Holy Synod of the Antiochian Orthodox Church has defrocked retired Metropolitan Joseph Zehlaoui, stripping him of his clerical rank and privileges.
The decision comes after a Synodal Committee investigated the circumstances surrounding Metropolitan Zehlaoui’s resignation from his leadership role in the Archdiocese of North America. The committee found that following his retirement, Metropolitan Zehlaoui:
- Made inappropriate claims of ownership over Archdiocesan property.
- Demanded a significant financial sum from the Archdiocese through his lawyers.
- Threatened legal action and public conflict with the Church.
- Ultimately filed a lawsuit against the Archdiocese in a US civil court.
These actions, according to the Holy Synod, constitute violations of Church scripture and canons. As a consequence, Metropolitan Zehlaoui has been found guilty of:
- Improper conduct regarding church property and finances.
- Initiating a legal case against the Church in secular court.
The Holy Synod has defrocked Metropolitan Zehlaoui, removing him from the clergy and returning him to the laity. He is no longer entitled to the rights and benefits associated with being a bishop. The Synod prays for him to find peace and repentance in his remaining days.
The Archdiocese of North America has been directed by the Holy Synod to take all necessary steps to safeguard its property and interests.
