The Romanian Orthodox Church

Between June 18-19, 2009, at the Patriarchal Residence, under the presidency of His Beatitude Daniel, the working sessions of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church are unfolding. At the start of the synodal meeting, the bishops for the vacant seats of Slobozia and Calarasi and, respectively, of Husi were elected.

First, under the presidency of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, as Metropolitan of Muntenia and Dobrudja, a secret ballot was cast for the election of the new Bishop of Slobozia and Calarasi. Right Rev. Vincentiu, Patriarchal Vicar Bishop, and Right Rev. Varsanufie, Vicar Bishop of the Bucharest Archdiocese, were the candidates selected by the Metropolitan Synod of Muntenia and Dobrudja upon consultations with the Eparchial Assembly of the Diocese of Slobozia and Calarasi. The vote results yielded 39 votes for Right Rev. Vincentiu (Grifoni) and 7 votes for Right Rev. Varsanufie.

Right Rev. Vincentiu will be enthroned as Bishop of Slobozia and Calarasi by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel in the Diocesan Cathedral of Slobozia on Sunday, June 28, 2009.

Subsequently, under the presidency of Most Rev. Teofan, Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina, the election through secret ballot of the new Bishop of the Husi Diocese. Right Rev. Sebastian, Bishop of Slatina, and Right Rev. Corneliu, Vicar Bishop of the Husi Diocese, were the candidates selected by the Metropolitan Synod of the Metropolitanate of Moldavia and Bukovina, upon consultations with the Eparchial Assembly of the Husi Diocese. As Right Rev. Sebastian has declined to participate as candidate, the Holy Synod has completed the list with Right Rev. Gurie, Vicar Bishop of the Craiova Archdiocese. The vote count yielded 43 votes for Right Rev. Corneliu and 3 votes for Right Rev. Gurie.

The enthronement ceremony of Right Rev. Corneliu, the newly elected shepherd of the Husi Diocese, will be celebrated by Most Rev. Teofan, Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bukovina, in the Diocesan Cathedral of Husi, on Monday, June 29, 2009, on the feast day of the Cathedral, Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
