Asmara- Eritrea: According to a report published on the Portal of the Eritrean Orthodox Church, ruins of an ancient Church was unearthed in the Berik sub-region of the Maekel Regional Administration in Eritrea.

The Chief Officer of the Patriarchal Museum, Dr Jospeh and other representatives of the Church explored the location on the 11th of February 2021. They were able to excavate pottery and other items. Samples have been collected for further research.

The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the six Churches that belong to the ancient Oriental Orthodox communion that received autocephaly from the Coptic Orthodox Church upon the political separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia in1993.
