Yerevan-Armenia: The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church has issued a statement regarding the current political crisis in the country between the government of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the Armed Forces.

The statement reads: “The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, upon learning of the statement issued by the General Staff of the Armed Forces and the subsequent statement released by the Prime Minister of RA, is following the developments around them with deep concern. In this post-war crisis situation, when the Homeland faces a variety of political, economic and social challenges, the incessant calls for accusations and political revenge endanger national unity and security. The Mother See considers the further aggravation of the situation inadmissible and destructive, calling on our people to show prudence and responsibility, not to give in to provocations, as well as refrain from civil clashes. The Mother See urges the President, the Prime Minister, the NA President, the Government members and the leaders of all political forces of the Republic of Armenia to seek a solution to this difficult situation at the negotiating table, for the sake of love towards our Homeland and people. May the Most Caring God keep our native state and our people in peace under the auspices of His Holy Right Hand”.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia accused the Military of an attempted coup against his government after the country’s armed forces said he and his cabinet must resign.

Pashinyan has been facing severe pressure from the hierarchy of the Armenian Church, opposition parties and some of the general public to step down as a result of the heavy loss encountered by the Armenian armed forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with the Azerbaijan military and Turkish mercenaries as well as for signing a peace treaty with the aggressors.
