Chicago: In his recent statement OCP Chancellor Chorbishop Kyriakose Thottupuram of Chicago urged meeting between Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II of Antioch and All East – Primate of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church and Baselius Marthoma Paulose II – Catholicos of the East and Metropolitan of Malankara- Primate of the Indian Malankara Orthodox Church.

The Chancellor called for unity and prayed for peace in Malankara between the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch and the Indian Malankara Orthodox Church.

The statement

“I urge our new Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Ephraim II to invite the Catholicos of the East for a friendly meeting, and later move towards creative dialog for complete union. There is a dictum in English, “Charity begins at home”. Most Holy Father, we are all ONE family, ONE home; we are all waiting for the light of love (charity) in our home lighted by Your Holiness. I understand that Malankara always wanted and does want a healthy sisterly relationship with Antioch.

Most Holy Father, this is the most important challenge of your Patriarchal ministry: to bring the Patriarchate of Antioch and the Catholicate of the East together as ONE team keeping both jurisdictions independent without one encroaching the other in autonomy of administration and autocephaly. ”

The statement of Resp Kuriakose Corepiscopo is the opinion of the majority of silent faithful; it deserves utmost importance. I wrote to HH Patriarch designate, the same message in a different words. But it is not very easy to ignore Thomas I, that is the whole problem; also he has groomed some as his successor; there are too many bishops in both sides, these are real hurdles. On the other side also some radicals are against unity, which HH Catholicos will find hard to mend them.

Yet, I believe peace and unity is the will of God; even after warring and litigating over hundred years, still, majority faithful earnestly desire unity. So as suggested by the eminent scholar Dr Kuriakose Corepiscopa and many other well-meaning church leaders, I feel confident that both HH Patriarch and HH Catholicos come together and initiate peace; Let God work through them, KK Johnachen

    Rev. Fr. Kuriakose Thottupuram, a
Cor-episcopa of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, has got every right to congratulate the new Patriarch HH Aprem II in English as well as in Syriac, in his personal capacity, since both being friends while at USA.

However, it should not be done at the cost of “Malankara Orthodox Church”, wherein at present he is a member. As far as I can understand, nobody in the Church, including HH the
Catholicose of the East, has not authorized him to officially contact the new Patriarch, calling for a dialogue for church unity.

As per me, any meaningful effort for the unity in the Malankara Church, should first come from the new Patriarch, since his predecessors are mainly responsible creating division in the church.

    1) The new Patriarch should be able to withdraw his predecessor Yakoob III’s Bull No.271/1970, which denies priesthood to St. Thomas, the Apostle of Jesus Christ and founder of
    Malankara Orthodox Church.

    (2) Withdraw the late Patriarch Yakoob III’s bull, illegally “dismissing” HH Augen I, the late
    Catholicose of the East.

    3) He should also be able to ‘withdraw and retire’ the present Shrestha Catholicose of the Jacobite faction in Kerala, a post his predecessor has illegally created.

Any Hope? Any chance? Or else, the Malankara Orthodox Church, should proceed on its own!

Mr. Oommen G Pancker, How it can be possible. HB Bassalious Thomas Ist is the only one catholica in india right now who has true ordianation as catholicose. So asking for a retirement is not rising at all. And in suryini sabha there is no history of keeping two catholicos (even if retire aslo). We can think of making as Bassalious paulose as assistant to HB Thomas Ist. by an kanonika ordiation thinking of the unity In Malankara Church. And baslious paulose II of IOC desevers that as he is younger that HB Thomas in every sense in preist hood also….Think that ..may be unity will possible.. please dont think of retaring HB thomas Ist a true Bava who is sincere & obident of Holy church of antioch in all hurdles.
