Sofia-Bulgaria: The Bachkovo Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church has been selected as the “Monastery of the Decade” as part of the largest campaign to preserve and promote the cultural and historical heritage of Bulgaria titled “Wonders of Bulgaria “.

The award was presented by Maria Gabriel, the Bulgarian EU Commissioner to the Abbot of the Bachkovo Monastery. The solemn event was attended by Vice President Iliana Yotova, Vezhdi Rashidov, the Chairman of the Committee on Culture, HE Zakia El Midawi, the Ambassador of Morocco to Bulgaria and other officials who expressed their joy and heartfelt admiration for the phenomenal achievement.

The Abbot and the fraternity of the Bachkovo Stavropigial Holy Monastery expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Mrs Slavka Bozukova, Ch. editor of the Standard newspaper, as well as of all those who voted in the poll in favour of the Bachkovo Holy Monastery.

Founded in 1083 by Prince Gregory Pakourianos, the Bachkovo Orthodox Monastery is located on the banks of the Chepelare River, which is 189 km from Sofia. The monastery is directly subordinate to the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The monastery is well-known for its unique combination of Byzantine, Georgian and Bulgarian culture.
