Yerevan-Armenia: His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, received the newly appointed Greek Ambassador to Armenia, Christos Sofianopoulos, at the Holy Etchmiadzin Mother See on February 16,2024. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, addressing regional challenges, and preserving cultural heritage.

The Catholicos extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Sofianopoulos, expressing his hope for a successful tenure in bolstering the countries’ long-standing friendship. He emphasized the deep bonds rooted in shared Christian values and centuries-old ties.

His Holiness acknowledged the historical hardships both nations have endured, highlighting the importance of mutual support and strength in facing current challenges. He expressed satisfaction with the cooperation between the Armenian and Greek communities abroad and the deep connection between the Armenian Apostolic and Greek Orthodox Churches.

The Catholicos raised concerns about Armenia’s current situation and the plight of displaced Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. Ambassador Sofianopoulos assured His Holiness of his commitment to strengthening Armenian-Greek cooperation and preserving the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
