US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Visits Ecumenical Patriarch in Turkey

Istanbul- Turkey: Mike Pompeo, US secretary of States visited Turkey on Tuesday 17th November 2020. In his final visit to Turkey as US secretary of States, he visited His All-Holiness Barthelomious I the Patriarch of the Constantinople.  It was an exclusive private visit to the Patriarch without any official meetings in Ankara.

In July Pompeo made public criticisms against the Turkish President Erdogan for his actions that resulted in the conversion of the Hagia Sophia Greek Orthodox  Cathedral into a Mosque. This short visit to Patriarchate was made as part of  Pompeo’s seven-country visit in Europe and the Middle East.

Several reports say that the meeting was on religious freedom in the region. In recent months, the Erdogan regime made several involvements in restricting Christian and minority rights including the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Republic of Artsakh.
