Kyiv-Ukraine: Ukrainians commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy on the 6th of October 2021. In his speech, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine stated “In this place, the Nazis shot more than a hundred thousand people. It is difficult to speak in this place. For thousands of years, it was occupied by silence. It is difficult to breathe in this place. Thousands of children took their last breath here. It is difficult to stand in this place. Thousands of bullets were knocked down from their feet right here, in the Babin Yar tract, which is permeated with pain and screaming, blood and death. A place that the Lord has forsaken forever, and the devil bypasses. This is such a place. Terrible crimes took place here 80 years ago”.

President Yitzhak Herzog of Isreal, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Metropolitan Onufriy, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, several religious leaders, state dignitaries, representatives of various countries took part in the commemorative ceremony.

Around 33,771 Jews were exterminated by the Nazis in Babi Yar (a ravine in Kyiv) during the first week of October 1941. It was the largest mass killing by Nazis and their collaborators during the second world war.
