The Patriarch of Romania: Saint Constantine Brancoveanu was an educated ruler and a promoter of culture

On the occasion of bringing the shrine of the relics of Saint Martyr Prince Constantine Brancoveanu, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of Romania emphasised the personality of Saint Constantine Brancoveanu in his speech.

“Saint Constantine Brancoveanu was a great promoter of culture as well. He supported the printing of the Bible from Bucharest in 1688 which appeared in its first edition at the time of prince Serban Cantacuzino, and then it was printed again during the reign of Constantine Brancoveanu.

He was a man who set up high schools, the Princely Academy of Bucharest in 1694, preceding the University of Bucharest, libraries in monasteries, set up a school in Transylvania for protecting Orthodoxy at Sambata de Sus Monastery, one of his foundations. He has also printed a lot of books and not only in the Romanian language, but also in Greek, Slavonic, and the first book in the Arabic language in the world was printed at Snagov, in 1701, by printer Antim of Ivir”, His Beatitude explained.
