The head of the Georgian Church urged Georgians and Abkhazians to forgive Each Other

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II said that the war in Abkhazia in the early 1990’s was directed against the unity and brotherhood of Abkhazians and Georgians, and noted that they should forgive each other, because only in that their salvation.

“The war in Abkhazia was actually not between Abkhazians and Georgians, and against the unity and brotherhood of Abkhazians and Georgians. Therefore, this defeat as the Georgians and Abkhazians” – Ilia II said during a sermon on Monday to mark the 17 th anniversary the fall of Sukhumi, reports RIA Novosti.

“Some want us to turn off in order to dominate us. We must recognize this fact and to analyze what it will bring Abkhazia. Georgians and Abkhazians must forgive each other, should come and posoboleznovat each other. This is our salvation,” – said the Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia.

Shortly after the collapse of the USSR Abkhazia since 1931, were part of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic as an autonomous republic, declared independence from Tbilisi. Georgia 14 August 1992 entered into Abkhazia forces, but they were out there armed resistance from local militias and come to their aid Caucasian volunteers.

Tbilisi lost control over Cuhumi September 27, 1993, and Sept. 30 over the whole territory of Abkhazia, with the exception of the Kodori Gorge. Since then, Abkhazia became a self-governing territory, did not recognize Tbilisi’s jurisdiction. The Georgian leadership has always regarded Abkhazia as part of the country and sought a return to the region of Georgian refugees.

Russia after the five-day war in August 2008 recognized the independence of the former Georgian autonomies – Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Tbilisi declared Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
