USA: On the evening of February 29th, 2020, the Moa Anbessa Institute together with the Crown Council of Ethiopia, hosted the annual Victory of Adwa commemoration dinner at Washington D.C.’s Army & Navy Club. This annual gala event is held to celebrate the victory of Ethiopia under Emperor Menelik II over the colonial forces of the Kingdom of Italy in 1896. While this occasion has been held for several years now, it is the first time the Moa Anbessa Institute has taken over hosting the event. As in previous years, the President of the Crown Council, H.I.H. Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie has awarded Orders of Chivalry and Medals of the Ethiopian Empire to distinguished individuals for services past and present to Ethiopia, her people and culture in various fields.

OCP Chief Editor of Ethiopian Affairs, Deacon Solomon Kibriye was honored last year to receive the Star of Honor of Ethiopia, Commander Grade, from Prince Ermias, alongside other distinguished recipients.

The ceremonies this year began with a benediction and prayer by the Chaplain of the Crown Council, Most Reverend Memhir Abunu Mammo. During the course of the evening, the well-attended dinner was addressed by H.I.H. Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie, grandson of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, and President of the Crown Council of Ethiopia. The guests were also addressed by Major General Gregory Copley in his role as the President of the International Society of Imperial Ethiopian Orders, and by Prof. Giovanni Ruffini who spoke of Ethiopia’s glorious history. Ms. Rahel Getachew acting as Mistress of Ceremonies, along with Lij Anania Abebe, G.O.S.E., Mr. Nebiyat Demissie, C.S.E., and Ms. Mimi Makonnen raised toasts, and conducted the events, assisting Prince Ermias with the investitures.
