Secretary of the Diocese of Bila Tserkva consecrated as Bishop of Rokytne

On December 25, commemoration of St Spyridon of Tremithous, His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Refectory Church of the Kyiv Caves Monastery, in concelebration of Metropolitan Bessarion of Ovruch and Korosten, Archbishop Metrophanews of Bila Tserkva and Bohuslav, Archbishop Augustine of Lviv and Halych, Archbishop Anthony of Sarny and Polissya, Archbishop Pavel of Vyshhorod, Archbishop Anthony of Boryspil, Archbishop Alexander of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy, Bishop Panteleimon of Uman and Zvenigorod, Bishop Volodymyr of Shepetivka and Slavuta, Bishop Volodymyr of Nizhyn and Pryluky, Bishop Ilariy of Makariv, Bishop Ioasaph of Nova Kakhovka and Henychesk, and Bishop Panteleimon of Vasylkiv.

During the divine service the episcopal consecration of secretary of the Diocese of Bila Tserkva archimandrite Nykodym Baranovskyy was performed. In compliance with the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, presided by His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr of Kyiv and All Ukraine on December 23, 2010, the newly consecrated bishop will be titled “of Rokytne” (Journal 45).

Before the beginning the Liturgy the rite of faith profession was performed, during which archimandrite Nykodym Baranovskyy said three Creeds in the middle of the church: the Nicene, the Alexandrian and the Athanasian Creed.

Following the worship service His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr addressed the newly-consecrated bishop with a word of exhortation and handed him the bishop’s crosier, following which, by tradition, His Grace Nykodym, gave the first episcopal blessing to the parishioners.

The previous evening, at the session hall of the Holy Synod of the UOC at the primate’s residence of the Kyiv Caves Monastery the nomination of archimandrite Nykodym as Bishop of Rokytne was held.

Bishop Nykodym Baranovskyy was born in Zhytomyr region in a family of workers. He got his theological education at the Kyiv Theological Schools. At the end of the study, in 2000 he was tonsured a monk with the name of Nykodym (in honor of the holy and righteous Nicodemus). The same year he was ordained a priest. Since 1997 till present he teaches Liturgical Theology at the Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary. In 2007 the future Archpastor was appointed secretary of the Diocese of Bila Tserkva.
