Sarov Nuclear Center saved world from World War III, Patriarch Kirill Believes

Nizhny Novgorod, September 14, Interfax – Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia points out to the important role of the Sarov Nuclear Center set up at the territory of Orthodox monastery in securing the country’s defensive capacity.

“Our country received deterrent weapons here in St. Seraphim’s Monastery (in Sarov – IF) and thus was saved at the most crucial moment of postwar history in the 20th century,” Patriarch Kirill said on Friday at his meeting with youth in the Nagorny Sports Palace in Nizhny Novgorod.

He further said that “during “the cold war” it was nuclear weapons that prevented World War III with its most terrible and harmful consequences.”

The Patriarch urged to remember that God’s providence “leads even bad human deeds to good outcome.” According to him, “to close the Sarov Monastery was a horrible thing to do, but God’s providence brought it to good outcome.”

Patriarch Kirill also noted that the Church has always been “very persistent” in standing for “world without weapon,” especially in years of the “cold war” it urged for “reserved attitude to arms race.”
