NEW DELHI: Describing Pope Shenouda III as a great Egyptian patriot, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today expressed condolences on the demise of the charismatic patriarch who led the Coptic church for four decades.

In his letter to Egyptian foreign minister Mohamed Kamel Amr, Krishna said he was deeply saddened to learn about the demise of the pope.

“Pope Shenouda III was both a great Egyptian patriot and believer in the virtues of religious tolerance and reconciliation.

“We in India share the sense of loss at the passing away of this great figure,” he said.

“I offer my sincere condolences to the Egyptian people and members of the Coptic Orthodox faith,” the Minister added.

Back in Cairo today, tens of thousands of mourners assembled in front of the iconic St Mark’s Cathedral in the Egyptian capital to pay their tearful last respect to the Coptic pope.

88-year-old leader of the largest Christian group in the Middle East passed away on Saturday and will be buried tomorrow.
