Remembering Fr. John Meyendorff

SVOTS – 27/7/18

Last week the Seminary’s new academic dean, Dr. Ionuţ-Alexandru Tudorie, had mentioned Fr. John Meyendorff, among others, as one of his inspirations. Just days later, on the anniversary of Fr. Meyendorff’s repose,  it was beautiful to see other academics, clergy, and others post on social media about how Fr. John had also inspired them.

The Protopresbyter John Meyendorff, dean of SVOTS from 1984 to 1992 and professor of Church History from 1959 to 1992, fell asleep in the Lord on July 22, 1992, just months after he had retired from his many years of service to the Seminary and the Orthodox Church.

Fr. John, like other great Orthodox theologians and figures who graced SVOTS throughout its history, will remain an inspiration for those who knew him in life and those who continue to encounter him through his many published works, his influence in Orthodox academia and the Church—in North America and abroad—and the stories of those blessed through his teaching and ministry.

As we remember Fr. John Meyendorff and his incredible gifts in service to the Hope that is Christ our Lord, remember also that you can hear his voice and enjoy his lectures that have been preserved on the new website,digi.svots.edu, and read his many titles published by SVS Press.

May his memory be eternal!
