Putin says relations with Orthodox Church are Cordial

05.07.2010

USOVO (Moscow region), July 5 (Itar-Tass) – On Monday Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited a new church compound of Christ the Saviour not Made by Hands situated in the settlement of Usovo in the west of Moscow.

Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill and Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsy and Kolomna had sanctified the cathedral before the prime minister arrived.

The church compound was built on the initiative of a local resident and financed by the Rosneft Company. “Local parishioners appealed to Putin who entrusted us with the cathedral construction,” Vice-Premier Igor Sechin said. The construction of the church compound continued around a year after it was launched on April 2, 2009.

“At present, the relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the government are going through a special period distinguished by particular cordiality,” Putin said during the visit to the cathedral. “We are not merely returning to the church what was illegally annexed after 1917, but we have been building new cathedrals,” he stressed.
