PALM SUNDAY ORTHODOX PILGRIMAGE IN BUCHAREST – 27 March 2010

Saturday, 27 March 2010, on the eve of the royal feast of the Entrance of the Lord in Jerusalem (Palm Sunday), the Romanian Patriarchate and the Archdiocese of Bucharest will organise the Palm Sunday pilgrimage in Bucharest, with the participation of priests, monks and faithful from the capital city and from Ilfov county, informs the Press Office of the Romanian Patriarchate. This religious-missionary event, organised with the support of the Basilica Press Centre of the Romanian Patriarchate, is part of the manifestations of the year 2010, that the Holy Synod proclaimed as Homage year of the Orthodox Creed and of the Romanian Autocephaly.

The Pilgrimage will begin at “Radu Vodă” Monastery (4.15 p.m.) and will follow Radu Vodă St., Mărăşeşti Avenue, Dimitrie Cantemir Avenue, Bibescu Vodă St., Şerban Vodă St. (with a stop at “Saint Spiridon the New” St.), Principatele Unite St., Ienăchiţă Văcărescu St., Sfânta Ecaterina St. (with a stop at “Saint Ecaterina” church, chapel of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of “Patriarch Justinian” of the University of Bucharest), Bibescu Vodă St., Aleea Dealul Mitropoliei and will end at the Patriarchal Cathedral, where the pilgrims will be met by His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Here is the complete programme of the pilgrimage:

– 4.10 p.m. – at the Radu Vodă Monastery, His Grace Varsanufie Prahoveanul, Assistant Bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest will consecrate the willow branches that will be given to the faithful;

– 4.15 p.m. – departure from Radu Vodă Monastery;

– 4.45 – at the church of “Saint Spiridon the New”, the procession will be met by priests and faithful of the parishes of “Saint Spiridon”, “Slobozia” and “Saint Alexe” of deanery III capital;

– 5.00 p.m. – at “Saint Ecaterina” church, the procession will be met by Rev.. Professors and theological students of the Faculty of Theology of “Patriarch Justinian” of Bucharest;

– 5.14 – at the Patriarchal Cathedral the procession will be met by His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, who will deliver a sermon.

The deaneries of the Archdiocese of Bucharest in the county of Prahova (Ploieşti, Vălenii de Munte, Câmpina and Urlaţi) will organise local Palm Sunday pilgrimages.
