Typical Serb – always looking for someone to blame for historical events. His accusations are a carbon copy of standard ROC and Kremlin propaganda. Of course, he has to support Moscow – who else will support him once the matter of the Macedonian Church and the Church of Montenegro come to the fore? Rather than commiserate with the poor Ukrainians who have suffered so much because of Russian ecclesiastical domination since 1686, he seeks to prolong their suffering. I’m sure, if he could, he’ld probably blame all-of-the-above for the fall of the Soviet Union and the proclamation of an independent Ukraine.

Typical Serb he may be but a good and holy man he is certainly. As someone some association with the newly declared Church in Ukraine, I know that the issue is much more complex than simple criticism of Irinej can convey. There are two sides to this and in spite of the unbecoming and intemperate language towards Constantinople from some within the Moscow Patriarchate, they do have a legitimate complaint. I also have sympathy for many within Ukrainian Orthodoxy whose claims have fallen on deaf ears – Moscow wrongly ignored them. Even so, that should not lead to schism. Constantinople had long agreed not to recognise schismatic or anathematised Ukrainian clergy yet it did an about face much to the understandable ire of Moscow and others in multiple jurisdictions. Abuse is not needed but patience, wisdom, dialogue and prayer. Holy Orthodoxy is the Church of Christ and His will must be paramount. Human pride has not part of this. It is incumbent on all Orthodox Christians to work and pray for the resolution of this blight on the Church of Christ. May He have mercy on us all for what we do.
