Orthodox church commemorates St. Alexander Nevsky

Sofia. on 23rd November the Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Alexander Nevsky, along with a festive liturgy in Sofia’s famous Alexander Nevsky chatedral. On this occasion, His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Neophyte will join together with the bishops of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church to head a liturgy, starting from 9.30 am.

St. Alexander Nevsky was born in 1220. He lived at a time when the Russian lands were under Tatar control. During his rule, the Swedish king headed an attack against Novgorod with a large army. Prince Alexander assumed the defense of his city and deeply believing in God’s help he won a glorious victory, for which was named “Nevsky”.

Later, Alexander was approved by the Tatar khan to become the of Grand Duke Vladimirski , Kievski and Novgorodski. Then he became the sole defender of the Orthodox faith and people against the Tatars. However, Duke Alexander acted not with sword, but with wisdom and patience.

St. Alexander reigned ten years and in that time he has done much good for the religion, the church and the people.
