Orthodox church activists protest at Pussy Riot exhibition

21/9/2012

Nine people have been detained after Orthodox church activists in Russia disrupted the opening of an art exhibition devoted to the controversial punk band, Pussy Riot.

Three members of the group were jailed in August for their protest performance in Moscow’s Orthodox cathedral, calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of President Putin.

Burmese opposition leader, Aung San Su Kyi, who is currently on a tour of the United States, has added her voice to those calling for the band members to be released.

Alpa Patel reports.
