Kiev- Ukraine/London-UK: Oleksander Usyk the famous Orthodox Christian boxer from Ukraine defeated Anthony Joshua of UK to win World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organization (WBO), International Boxing Federation (IBF), International Boxing Organization (IBO) championships. The match took place on the 2th of September 2021 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, UK. Usyk won by a unanimous decision.

He was the undisputed cruiserweight title between 2018 and 2019 and became the the first cruiserweight champion to hold all four major world titles. Usyk is also one among three boxers (world heavyweight champions) to have unified the cruiserweight world titles (others being Evander Holyfield and David Haye).

Oleksander Usyk is a faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate UOC-MP). Usyk is considered a strong Christian Orthodox believer. In one of his interviews, Usyk stated that he “fought to praise his Lord Jesus Christ.”

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky cheered Usk’s victory over Joshua. However, according to a recent article by DW, the boxer remains a controversial figure for nationalist Ukrainians due to his ties with the UOC-MP as well as for appearing in a Russian film about Orthodox Christianity.
