Its establishment is connected with the events of the Council of Constantinople of 843, which was convened by the right-believing empress Theodora in order to restore the veneration of icons in Byzantine.

As a remembrance of this event, important for the Christian world and in commemoration of empress Theodora, every year, on the first week of Lent the Orthodox Church solemnly commemorates restoration of the icon veneration. Addressing the flock with archpastoral word, His Beatitude spoke about the history and significance of the holiday.
