New Publication on History of Armenian Prayer

With the blessings of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholiocos of All Armenians; History of the Armenian Prayer by H. Vardan Hatsuni, has been republished by the Publishing Department of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

The publication is one of the most comprehensive works of the 20th century on Armenian liturgical literature and the Armenian rite. It has retained its importance and significance in the study on the Armenian rite, and was therefore republished.

The first publication of H. Vardan Hatsuni’s book was published in 1965, nearly 20 years after the author’s death. One of the valuable features of the first publication is the availability of the original Liturgical Services Reference Guide inserted as an appendix, which was taken from the Mkhitaryan fathers manuscripts at the Manuscript Repository of San Lazzaro Island, Venice.

In the current revision, based on literary publishing principles, personal and geographic name lists have been compiled, to grant more ease to the readers for searching any material in the book. In order to give a complete and comprehensive overview, attached to the appendix is the Liturgical Services Reference Guide of Rev. Fr. Zenon Bareghyan, which was written as part of his Gevorkian Theological Seminary graduation thesis, and is based on a number of manuscripts in the Manuscript Repository of Yerevan. Dn. Michael Margaryan prepared the revision of the original of the book.

The book was published by the benevolent sponsorship of the benefactor of the Mother See, Mr. Sarkis Gabrellian and is dedicated to the vibrant memory of the late Rev. Fr. Karapet Glchyan.
