New Book ‘The Rila Monastery in Modern times (1944-2019) – Politics, Ideology, Faith’ Published

Sofia-Bulgaria: A new book titled “Rila Monastery in modern times (1944-2019) – Politics, ideology, faith” was released in the Bulgarian language at the press club of the Bulgarian News Agency on t28/621. The nook was released by Bishop of Adrianople Evlogiy, abbot of the Holy Monastery. The author of the book Maria Zlatkova and the general director of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency Kiril Valchev was present for the occasion.

The event was also attended by Bishop Polycarp of Belogradchik, Vicar of the Metropolitan of Sofia, Archimandrite. Pachomius, rector of the Sofia Theological Seminary, Archimandrite Euthymius, Fr. Meletius, journalists and public figures. His Majesty King Simeon II was a special guest of the event as well.

The book focuses on the repression against monks who disagreed with the new government policy, the deprivation of the monastery of its economic independence by confiscating the arable land, forests and industrial enterprises. Special attention is paid to the nationalization of the monastery in 1961 and the expulsion of the monks, the return of some of them in 1968 and their coexistence with the newly established National Museum. The work also sheds light on the restoration of the monastic life in 1991, also the ongoing efforts to regain the seized lands and valuables.
