Metropolitan Nicolae of Banat enters eternal rest

His Eminence Nicolae was born on 21 November 1923, in Caransebes city. From 1934 – 1942 he attended the primary school and high school in Caransebes. He was a student of the Faculty of Theology from 1942 – 1946. In 1943 he was ordained unmarried deacon by Bishop Veniamin Nistor of Caransebes.

After graduating the Faculty, he attended the post graduate courses for a doctor’s degree, and on 30 June 1949 he delivered the thesis entitled: “Life and death of Saint Antony the Great. Beginning of the Christian Monasticism in the Nile Valley”, under the supervision of Rev. Prof. Ioan G. Coman.

In 1960, he was ordained priest. He became a monk at Cernica Monastery in the Archdiocese of Bucharest, on 12 January 1961.

He was ordained hierarch in the church of “Saint Spiridon the New” of Bucharest, on 15 January 1961, by patriarch Justinian Marina together with two other hierarchs. He was installed as Bishop of Arad in the Episcopal Cathedral of Arad, on 22 January 1961.

On 17 February 1962, he was elected Archbishop of Timisoara and Caransebes and Metropolitan of Banat.

He was installed on 4 March 1962, in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Timisoara, by Patriarch Justinian Marina.

According to the Statutes for the Organisation and Functioning of the Romanian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church is Archbishop of Timisoara and Metropolitan of Banat locum tenens, who will be remembered at all the religious services of the Archdiocese of Timisoara, till the election of the new canonical hierarch.
