Metropolitan Mar Gregorios slams corporate culture, says spiritual life hit by lack of ‘family values’

By Liju Cherian – Indian Malankara Orthodox Church – May 2014

MUSCAT : HG Dr Gabriel Mar Gregorios, Metropolitan of Thiruvananthapuram Diocese, of Indian Orthodox Church has come down heavily against the corporate culture among multi-national companies (MNCs) operating in India’s high tech cities.

Mar Gregorios was addressing a seminar on empowerment of youth and addressing young members of Muscat Mar Gregorios Orthodox Maha Edavaka Orthodox Christian Youth Movement (OCYM) after launching its membership drive for 2014-15 on April 25, Friday.

The Metropolitan cautioned that the emergence of corporate culture was dangerous with its waning family life and increase in high divorce rates. This, His Grace, added was very much indicative of an emerging society.

It is an irony, the Metropolitan pointed that no Indian laws were applicable among the existing Technoparks where MNCs rule the roost and are in a different world of their own. “The high salaries of the executives and their purchasing power, mismanagement of money and having no compassion or sharing for others,” are their key hallmarks.

Pointing out its disastrous consequences, Dr Mar Gregorios said it was due to this that family values was slowly perishing and affecting spiritual life of the techies and blamed that this culture was creating a counter culture.

His Grace also pointed that the life of techies was least Christ oriented and less life oriented.

The Holy Shepherd shared several examples of his lifes experience in France and Britain where cohabitation and live-in relationship were in existence 30 years ago. His Grace said the same concepts were coming in here now among the techies.

The Metropolitan ended with a quote from the life story of motivational speaker Robin Sharma’s The Monk Who Solid His Ferrari and who based his life on “life fast, die young lifestyle.

Earlier, the Metropolitan of Thiruvananthapuram Diocese, launched the 2014-2015 membership drive of the Orthodox Christian Youth Movement (OCYM) after the Holy Eucharist.

The Metropolitan called upon the youth members to create models by which each one of them could imitate and favoured an urgent need to create a ‘counter culture.’

“Culture that is rampant in society need not be ours, but what we need is to identify the values of the society,” the Holy Shepherd stressed adding upon that the values should be evolved from the Gospels and the role ‘model’ must be Jesus Christ.

Dr Mar Gregorios also wanted the youth to ‘dedicate’ Christ as Lord in our hearts, to ‘sanctify’ Christ as Lord into our hearts and finally to ‘seperate’ Christ into each one of our hearts.

Wilson V George, new Chairman, Board of Directors (BoD), Indian Schools, in Oman, who was the chief guest also addressed the gathering. Maha Edavaka President/Vicar Fr Joji George Koickalethu, Associate Vicar, Fr Binu John Thomas, also spoke.

Dr Mar Gregorios lighted the traditional lamp and distributed 4 new membership forms — 2 each for men and women (new members Sonia Johny and Shina Nidhin). It was for the first time young women were also inducted into membership of the youth body as per a Kalpana from HH the Catholicos of the East.
