Kerala: The former Primate and Senior Metropolitan Joseph Mar Koorilose of the Old Orthodox Church of Thozhiyur (The Malabar Independent Syrian Church) entered eternal rest. He was 61.
Joseph Mar Koorilose was consecrated as a bishop by Metropolitan Alexander Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar. In the year 2001, the Thozhiyur Church council unanimously elevated him to the rank consecrate the “Valiya Methrapolitha” with a change in the constitution.
The Malabar Independent Syrian Church is separated from the Malankara Churches in 1772. It is considered to be a church in former Oriental Orthodox tradition but not in communion with any of the Orthodox Church, rather it maintains communion with The Malanakara Marthoma Syrian Church of Malabar which itself separated from the Indian Malankara Orthodox Church during the period 1818-1898.
His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Paulose II – Catholicos of the Apostolic Throne of St Thomas in the East and Metropolitan of Malankara – Primate of the Indian Orthodox Malankara Church expressed his condolences over the demise of Metropolitan Coorilose. Catholicos paid his last respect to mortal remains of the Late Metropolitan and observed special prayers.
