Metropolitan Anba Abraham of Jerusalem & Near East Enters Eternal Rest

His Eminence Metropolitan Anba Abraham rests in the Lord after serving 24 years as Metropolitan of Jerusalem and the Near East.
His Eminence was born in Al Manshaa, Sohag on June 30, 1943 and was called ‘Ibrahim’. His parents brought him up in a Christian environment which manifested in his love for God, his strong attachment to the church and serving at a very young age. After completing high school, he joined the Faculty of Agriculture and received with excellence a Bachelor degree in 1964 that qualified him for postgraduate studies. In 1970, he got his Master’s degree in therapeutic herbs and then a doctorate in therapeutic plants in 1976. He was appointed an assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences in 1980. .
As for his religious interests, His Eminence Metropolitan Abraham joined the Coptic Theological Seminary and earned a bachelor degree in 1971. He then joined the Institute of Coptic Studies and got a master’s degree in Theological Science in 1971.
After receiving all these degrees, he sought the monastic life and asceticism. He gave up the world and went to Saint Bishoy Monastery to become a monk in 1983 and was consecrated as Sidrak Al Anba Bishoy on March 19, 1984. After becoming a monk, His Holiness the Thrice Blessed Pope Shenouda III commissioned him to serve the Copts in Switzerland.
On January 3, 1991 he was seated as Metropolitan of Jerusalem and the Near East by His Holiness the Thrice Blessed Pope Shenouda III. From the day he was seated as Metropolitan of the Holy City till the day he departed, His Eminence the Thrice Blessed Metropolitan Abraham did not spare effort in caring for the Coptic flock providing them with spiritual guidance and social care on all levels.
His Eminence the Thrice Blessed Metropolitan Abraham also undertook several projects that contribute to the development of the Coptic Church in the Holy Land. The Coptic Church witnessed one of the brightest eras during his time.
