Romanian Church

On 14 February 2012, the annual working session of the Church National Council of the Romanian Orthodox Church was held in the Synodal Hall of Patriarchal Residence, under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Assistant Bishops to the Patriarch Ciprian Campineanul and Varlaam Ploiesteanul were also present.

To start with the annual working session, the Patriarch of Romania presented the social philanthropic activity of the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2011: “In 2011, the social philanthropic activity of the Romanian Patriarchate went off through 706 institutions and social services.

At the level of the church structures, the eparchial centres, deaneries and parishes, the diagram of the social philanthropic centres is the following: 171 social canteens and bakeries, 58 institutions providing medical services and pharmacies, 80 daily centres for children, 11 educational centres, 46 daily centres for old people, 22 services for old people, 40 community centres, 35 family type centres, 39 social kindergartens, after-school and special schools, 22 protected dwelling places, 130 centres of information, counselling and resources, 6 educational institutions for adults, 33 emergency centres for homeless people, victims of the domestic violence and of the trafficking in persons, and 13 camps.”

The members of the Church National Council analysed the activity of the Romanian Orthodox Church in 2011 focusing on the pastoral missionary and social philanthropic services, monastic life, theological education and teaching religion in public schools, printing editorial aspect and mass-media, church cultural patrimony, constructions of new places of worship, relations with other religious cults, care for the Romanian Orthodox communities abroad, inter-church and inter-religious relations etc.

The Church National Council is the executive central body of the Holy Synod and of the Church National Assembly, made up of 12 members of the Church National Assembly, one clergy and one laic representing each Metropolitanate of the country, assigned for 4 years and for two terms at last.
