Lebanese President Michel Suleiman extended his condolences for the death of Greek Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius IV Hazim, the National News Agency reported.

Other political and religious dignitaries also voiced their sadness at the death of Hazim, including Lebanese Maronite Patriarch Beshara Boutros al-Rai, who underscored the “wise” role played by the late patriarch as a religious leader.

Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani also expressed his sadness in a statement he released following the news regarding the patriarch’s death.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati extended his condolences and requested considering the day of Hazim’s funeral a day of national mourning.

The Greek Orthodox patriarch died on Wednesday in neighboring Lebanon at the age of 92 after a stroke, an announcement from the patriarchate said.
