KNOWING THE PURPOSE OF EVERYTHING THROUGH THE POWER OF THE RESURRECTION

The conference is organized by the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade, in collaboration with the Orthodox Christian Studies Program of Fordham University.

The Department of Patristic Studies of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade in Serbia is organizing an International Symposium on Saint Maximus the Confessor in Belgrade, October 18-21, 2012, commemorating the 1350th year since his repose in 662.

The goal of the symposium is to highlight those elements and aspects of Saint Maximus’s teaching that are relevant for our time, especially the theological, philosophical, psychological and other questions it raises.

A number of areas present themselves as interesting foci for the conference: theology, anthropology, hermeneutics, philosophy, science, eschatology, human physis, freedom, otherness, person, gender, psychology, biology, cosmology, physics, modern and ancient philosophy.

The Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade, in conjunction with the International Symposium, entitled
St. Maximus the Confessor Today

October 18 – 21, 2012 – Belgrade is announcing, with the blessing of the Faculty Dean, His Grace, Bishop of Backa, KIR IRINEJ, an open competition for an independent icon exhibition dedicated to St. Maximus entitled:

The Mystery of Christ

All interested artists are invited to participate with their original and authentic works of art from the life of St. Maximus, contributing that science and art meet and intertwine in the testimony of the Mystery of Christ and the knowledge of the goal by the power of the Resurrection in the spirit of St. Maximus the Confessor.

The exhibition will take place at the Orthodox Theological Faculty at the time of the scientific symposium from October 18 to October 21, with the idea that all symposium participants can simultaneously take part in the icon exhibition, allowing for icons to be made available for purchase.

The competition is open to iconographers, painters and artists exclusively using iconographic technique.

Participants are asked to choose a topic taken from the life of St. Maximus the Confessor.

Printing of an exquisite catalog is planned.

A three-member commission will choose the final participants.

Chosen final participants will be contacted by October 1, 2012.

Please submit the following necessary requirements:

1. Three photographs of the icon (higher resolution; smallest format 10×15; the name of the icon, first and last names of the iconographer, technique and format of art are required to be written on the back side of the icon).
2. A brief work history.
3. Contact telephone number and email address.

Deadline for submission of materials is August 1, 2012. Late and incomplete submissions will not be taken into consideration.

Submitted materials will not be returned and participants are solely responsible for all packaging and shipping fees.
