International Symposium in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin

On April 13, the International Symposium entitled “The “Consequences” of Communism on the Churches” convened in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

Rev. Fr. Hovakim Manukian, Director of the Inter Church Department of the Mother See and Dr. Jouko Martikaynen, Professor from Gottingen University in German gave opening remarks, and touched on the inception of the idea for the Symposium. The organizers of the symposium expressed their appreciation to His Holiness Karekin II for the warm welcome to the headquarters of the Armenian Church, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

A message to the participants from His Eminence Jukka Paarma, Archbishop of Turku and Head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland was read, encouraging them in their endeavors.

April 13

Professor Eino Murtorinne – “Churches and Religions under Communism in Eastern and Central Europe”

Dr. Kimmo Kaariainen, Director of the Research Institute of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland – “General Concept of Religion in Post-Socialistic Countries”

Dr. Amatuni Virabian, Director of the National Archives of the Republic of Armenia – “Armenian Church in the Soviet Armenia in 1920-30s”

Professor Jouko Martikainen, Professor from Gottingen University, Germany – “Conflict with Islam and Communism: Trying to learn from 1300 years of Severe Experiences of the Armenian History”

Dr. Katharina Kanter, Professor of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany – “Active Opposition between Dialogue and Loyalty; Churches in the German Democratic Republic in 1970-1989/90”

In the evening of April 13, the symposium attendees viewed the film “His Holiness Vasken I, Catholicos of All Armenians” and attended a lecture entitled “Armenian Church in the 20th Century” by Rev. Fr. Yeghishe Sarmnsian.

April 14

Professor Jouko Talonen – “Church under the Pressure of Communism: The Development of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church after the World War II”

Archbishop Janis Vanags from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia – Commentary on the paper of Professor Talonen

Dr. Ugis Sildegs, Member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia – “Theology of Ghetto: Nikolay Plate as a Theologian of Soviet Latvia”

Rev. Fr. Alexander Vasyutin from the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchy – “The Russian Orthodox Church in 20th Century: Lessons from the Soviet Times”

The symposium members are scheduled to meet with His Holiness Karekin II in the afternoon of April 14. The conference will conclude on April 16.
