In the village of Qana, in Upper Egypt, Coptic Christian teacher Ayman Anwar Metari was attacked by a Salafist gang that cut off his ear and wounded him in the head and body, while shouting religious slogans.

The gang also burned his home and his car.

The attack came against a backdrop of Metari’s relations with a woman who rented an apartment from him.

Egyptian Mufti Dr. Ali Gum’a called the attack a crime stemming from an erroneous understanding of shari’a, because people may not attack each other.

Coptic Church representatives and human rights activists called for an investigation and for serious punishment for the perpetrators.

Coptic Patriarch Shenouda and Egyptian Interior Minister Mansour Al-‘Isawi agreed during a meeting to establish a council comprising Al-Azhar and Coptic Church clerics and Coptic and Muslim intellectuals and politicians, to deal with ethnic problems.

The province’s deputy military government conducted reconciliation meetings between the sides.
