HOLY PRINCE VLADIMIR LEADS IN VOTE FOR MOST OUTSTANDING UKRAINIAN POLITICAL FIGURE

Union of Orthodox Journalists – September 2016

Ukrainian citizens are voting for the historical figure who made the greatest contribution to the formation of Ukraine as an independent state. The survey is being conducted online on the 112 Ukraine private TV channel, reports Varjag on LiveJournal.

As of September 19 the Holy Prince Vladimir of Kiev, Baptizer of Rus, ranks first. Over thirty percent of respondents have expressed their opinion that the Equal-to-the-Apostle Prince Vladimir made the greatest contribution to the development of Ukraine. To date Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky (c. 1595-1657), through whose efforts Ukraine united with Russia, is ranked second with about twenty-three percent of respondents voting for him. The Holy Right-Believing Yaroslav the Wise, Grand Prince of Kiev (ruled 1019-1054), is ranked third with around sixteen percent of votes. Meanwhile, Stepan Bandera (c. 1909-1959), an ideologue of Ukrainian nationalism, is ranked fourth in the list with his nine percent.

“It should be noted,” writes the post’s author, “that some figures ‘who contributed the most’ – such as Shukhevich, Konovalets, Kravchuk – are depicted several times on the advertising booklet, as if its authors are encouraging voters to make the ‘right’ choice.”

The results of the vote will be announced on October 13 – the day before Defender of Ukraine Day. In total twenty-five statesmen were selected within the framework of this special project. To read the biographies of these eminent figures and vote for a specific historical personality and to see the current results, see the survey’s page (in Ukrainian).
