Greek Cypriot archbishop rejects Turkish Cypriot state

27/12/13

Greek Cypriot archbishop Chrysostomos II said ‘for us, a Turkish Cypriot state means annexation, which nobody wants.’

Chrysostomos II, the archbishop of the Greek Cypriot administration of southern Cyprus, said that it did not matter whether or not Turkey recognized his country while speaking on a local radio station.

The Greek Orthodox archbishop said ‘The entire world recognizes us, we don’t need Turkey to recognize us,’ during an interview regarding agreement over the expelling of illegal immigrants who enter Europe to Turkey.

After calling Turkey’s foreign relations a ‘façade’, he said ‘the Turks are aiming to create a Turkish state in Cyprus.’

Continuing, he said ‘For us, a Turkish Cypriot state means annexation, which nobody wants. We have decided on a solution and we must put all of our energy into that.’
