The UNESCO recognized celebration marked with violence in Ethiopia.

Addis Ababa- Ethiopia: Violent attacks were reported during the Epiphany  (Timkat) celebrations in some parts of Ethiopia (Harare regional state, Dire Dawa City, and some parts of Oromiya Ambo and Arsi).

On January 19, two Christians were slaughtered, few others were injured, ten Christian owned shopping centers and one fuel station, and farms were burned, cattle were stolen in the Oromiya regional state. Eyewitnesses in Merti Woreda (Arsi zone) stated that some police officers provided cover for such attacks. Hence, Epiphany was not celebrated in the Woreda region.

On January 20, Ketera, on the eve of Epiphany, Christians were attacked in Harar city of Harar regional state. Violent attacks continued on the 21 and 22 of January. Several Christian properties were destroyed, and few people were injured.

Abune Makarios, the Archbishop of East Hararghe stated that problems arose due to the laxity of the regional government officials.

On January 21, in Dire Dawa city administration, the members of the ‘Kahenate Semay Gregorious and Antony parish church were attacked by extremists while returning home after the Epiphany celebrations.

Co- Patriarch Abune Mathias of Ethiopia severely condemned the violent attacks.
