NICOSIA, Cyprus — Cyprus’ Orthodox Christian church says expanding its top ranks will make it easier for leaders to handle domestic problems without seeking outside help.
Archbishop Chrysostomos II said Monday that the constitution ratified Friday expanding the Holy Synod from 7 to 17 member bishops gives the church full autonomy.
According to church canon law, a Holy Synod requires at least 14 members to make binding decisions on key matters. Four years ago, the Cyprus church had to invite other Orthodox leaders, including from Syria and Egypt, to help handle the succession plans for the Cyprus archbishop who was too ill to serve.
Chrysostomos says the constitution also simplifies the way archbishops are elected. Synod members will choose among 3 candidates garnering the most lay votes.
