Coptic Orthodox Bishop Anba Epiphanius Found Dead

Egypt: His Grace Bishop Anba Epiphanius – Abbot of the Monastery of St. Macarius in Wadi al-Natroun was found dead in a pool of blood. Fractures were found on his skull as if the late Bishop was hit with some instrument. The Egyptian authorities have started an official investigation into the unusual death of the late bishop who was a great scholar and a pious servant of God. The prelate was 64 years old.

CHURCH STATEMENT ON MURDER OF ANBA EPIPHANIUS, ABBOT OF ST MACARIUS

Bishop Anba Suriel of Melbourne of the Coptic Orthodox Church wrote the following in his Facebook page:

“It is with deep pain and sadness that we farewell a blessed and holy man, His Grace Bishop Epiphanius. A scholar with amazing humility that I witnessed firsthand in my dealings with him over the past few years. A man with a deep love for the Church and its future. He had a passion to see the Church develop in its theological education both in Egypt and abroad. What happened to him outside his cell is truly a tragedy of enormous proportions that will not only be remembered in his monastery but indeed throughout the Coptic community and beyond, as he was respected by many worldwide. May the Lord repose his pure soul and grant comfort to all the Church.”
