Constantinople patriarch receives head of Abkhazian Church

11/1/2012

The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, on Tuesday received a delegation of the Abkhazian Church headed by Archimandrite Doropheus Dbar, Ekho Moskvy reports.

The parties discussed the status of the Abkhazian Church and its relations with the Church of Georgia.

The Orthodox Church of Abkhazia is officially a part of the Georgian Orthodox Church, but after the 2008 war it has been seeking independence.

Russian Patriarch Alexey II has always opposed the idea of the Abkhazian Church uniting with the Church of Russia. Now Abkhaz clerics hope the Ecumenical Patriarch will decide what their Church’s status should be.
