Christian Identity in Western Europe – An Inventory

Christian Identity in Western Europe – An Inventory

Manfred Karl Böhm (Editor- Christian Affairs Europe) OCP News Service – 4/7/18

Germany: According to a new survey (by the Pew Research Center, Washington D.C.), Western European Christians of 15 countries were surveyed and it was revealed that people are holding on to their Christian identity, but no longer practice their faith. Only a few attend the church service on regular basis. Most churchgoers were found in Portugal, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, and Ireland.

According to the survey, Churchgoers believe in God as depicted in the Bible, whereas non-practicing Christians tend to believe in a higher power or spiritual power in the universe. Both churchgoers and non-churchgoers take a different approach to Islam. For Christians, Islam is incompatible with national values and culture. Majority of non-practicing Christians advocate legalization of same-sex marriage and abortion.
